And I’ll form the head.

Review: Sidekick LX

Posted by rapaleeman on August 19, 2008

So the Nokia I bought off the internet was not exactly new and as such I was unable to unlock it.  I’m taking care of the matter, but that did not help me this weekend.  I needed a phone.  So I said eff it and I bought the LX.  I know, $400 cash for a phone is a tad steep but damn is it not actually worth it.

So I have previously owned a Sidekick 3, Sidekick iD, Sidekick 2008, and now a Sidekick LX and the LX is the best of the bunch.  I opted not to spend the extra 50 on the Tony Hawk model.  It looked cooler and all, but not worth fifty bones.  I bought Soul Calibur IV instead.

I’ll start with the first thing that people will see: the gorgeous 3 inch screen.  This thing is absolutely amazing.  It is made of the same tech that the Sharp Aquos TVs are made out of and it shows.  Clean, crisp, and surprisingly thin.  The screen is easy to read and makes reading even the smallest fonts readable.  Amazing.

The next thing is the form factor.  It is typical Sidekick (meaning held like a PSP), but the thing is so damn thin. From the front it looks huge what with the giant screen and flanking controls, but seriously, rotate this thing to the side and you won’t see much.  With that said it is still physically big in you hands and easy to hold up to your ear.  The controls are dead on and not as small as the buttons on the Sidekick 2008 which were almost too hard to press/find by feel.  The only button issue is the easy to press keys on the spine.  I have accidently turned the speakerphone on more than once.

In all though the feel of the phone is great.  The keyboard hidden under the is the best on any phone.  Hands down.  Perfect.  Plus, the phone doesn’t have that cheap Feeling of the 2008 version.  True the shell doesn’t come off, but the rubberized back is sweet and makes it easy to grip.  Plus the camera is in a little better spot.  I don’t keep putting my finger on the lens.  It just feels better overall to me than the 2008 did.  Easier to use and hold.

Ok, so I haven’t received the update yet, but even without it the phone is still worth it.  The camera, though less resolution, takes slightly better pictures and has an almost too bright flash.  It is speedy and while it has less RAM than the other models, it hasn’t skipped or locked up on me yet.

The software is again, typical Sidekick/Danger.  Everything is easy to find and use.  Plus with the Jump/Menu button shortcuts, life is a breeze.  The catalog is still there, but custom themes are cool.  I put the Tony Hawk one on.  It is sweet.  Also the e-mail, IM, and music player are sweet as well (thank you for the 3.5mm headphone jack).

I’m not going to keep beating the dead horse.  This is an awesome phone.  Period.  Quality, usability, and just overall form factor make this worth owning.  If you text a lot and need a powerhouse of a phone without all the Windows and Blackberry nonsense then this is it.  True it is a little bigger than the Sidekick 2008, but it is easier overall to use and has a sexier screen.  Definatley worth it.

Review: Sidekick iD

Posted by rapaleeman on May 5, 2008

As promised here is the review for the Sidekick iD or SKiD as I call it.  It won’t be as formal as the review for the SK3 (that was for another site as I said).  I think informal is the way to go with the reviews, but again, that may change.  Anyway on with the review (wow, do I need a new segway).

I picked up the Sidekick iD on Friday to replace the dead Shadow and much to my surprise it is actually not as “dumbed down” as I thought it would be.  All the research I did said it was essentially a Sidekick 3 without a camera, bluetooth, MP3 player, memory card and Edge speed.

While all of that is true, the rest of the Sidekick interface is intact and besides bluetooth, the rest of the features are not missed at all (surprisingly).  The camera on the SK3 is pretty bad so that isn’t a huge loss and the fact that I alreapy have an iPod, means I don’t need another MP3 player.  The only thing I miss is the customizable themes which could be done through the memory card.  Not a big loss.  Losing Edge speed hasn’t really made a difference either.  It was slow before and guess what?  Nothing has changed.

With the negativity out of the way let’s get to the good stuff.  For one, the SKiD is a little thicker than the 3 but a lot lighter.  The rubber bumpers (which are interchangable) help add to the grip and make is easier to hold when combining with the lighter weight.  The battery door is plastic, but with the bumpers it doesn’t matter.  Also no camera means I’m not hitting the lense anymore.  Nice.

I will say that when I first picked it up the phone felt really cheap.  After using it that is definately not the case, but it does feel that way.  The d-pad is loose, but the trackball is tighter.  The bumpers cover the other buttons and do a good job to add a better feel to the phone and the tactile feedback.

The screen is a tad smaller and a little bit more washed out than the 3 but it does the job.  Text and pictures are easy to see and read in any lighting condiiton.  The “kick” feels tighter with the screen being held closer to the body of the phone when closed.  It feels solid on that front.

The keyboard is outstanding.  Using the same one as the SK3, this is the highlight of the phone and the reason I picked this up.  Best.  Keyboard.  Ever.  Nuff said.

The interface is essentially identical to the SK3 meaning it is easy and simple to use.  T-Mob keeps your settings and address book backed up on their servers (well technically Danger does, but semantics really) so all my stuff was restored instantly.  Very cool and convenient.

Like I said, everything is the same inside so it is all good.  The hidden Snowbored is still a blast. PumpJack, the new free game is cool.  The address book and e-mail/text/IM clients are all still great and easy to use.  Definately something that Microsoft and Palm (Microsoft did just buy Danger so…) needs to adopt.  Very easy, simple, and just works.  No hacking or maipulating required.

Sound quality seems a little better.  Calls came through clearer and people said I sounded better and this was without bluetooth since the phone doesn’t offer it.  Speakerphone is good and loud, though still a tad distorted at the highest levels.

The battery also seems to last longer.  With all the extra “crap” gone the kick seems to last a lot longer.  I went 2 days and still had some charge before I fed the SKiD.  Impressive especially from a device not known for battery.

Overall it is a great phone that texts, makes calls, gets e-mail, does IM, and surfs the web.  Period.  That is all it does.  If that is all you need, get a SKiD.  Definately does all of those and does them well.  It may be a little too basic for some (no bluetooth is almost a crime), but the price was right.  They cost $150 with no contract and if you can still get a contract on them they are on $50 bucks.  Defiantely worth it and with those caveats it is a must for anyone looking for a business phone but don’t want a Blackberry, or any of those “old people” phones.

Random Post 5/02

Posted by rapaleeman on May 2, 2008

Sup playas.  So it’s Friday afternoon and I figured I’d check in.  Been a busy yet unproductive week.

I did see Harold and Kumar: Escape From Guantanamo Bay earlier this week and honestly it was comedy gold.  If you liked the first one or like Neil Patrick Harris definately check this out.  Truly it is great.

Iron Man drops today.  I’ll check it out this weekend and maybe give yall a review.  I was going to write on for Harold and Kumar but didn’t have the time.  May still.  Iron Man may not need a review from little lowly me,  but it may get one just so I can fight the man and support the uprising of the everyday persons.

Anyway, I got my $600 tax refund check (which is totally going to eff me over next year but whatever).  Went towards bills and a new phone.  Word of advice: do not put a high-powered magnet next to your phone.  It will probably not work afterwards.  My Shadow will be sorely missed.  (Loved that thing.  Lost my Lifehouse pictures too.)  Picked up a Sidekick ID (aka Sidekick with no features but a kickass keyboard) at Best Buy for cheap (read: not sticker price, love the employee discount without having to work there).  It was the cheapest phone I could find with a keyboard.  Damn texting has gotten it’s evil hands around my neck.  I’ll play with the thing this weekend and then pop a review up next week sometime.

I think I’m going to start reviewing everything.  I mean EVERYTHING.  From movies and video games, right down to new energy drinks and technology that I find and/or use long enough to give a valid review for.  Could be cool.  I’ll make new catagories as necessary for reviews so they stay organized.  This is a work-in-progress experiment, as is this entire blog thing to if it doesn’t work or I get complaints then we’ll see.  We’re in this together aren’t we?

The reason the blog is a little scattered as of late is because that’s how my mind works.  I think faster than I can type/talk.  For those that have actually talked to me know that and think it’s funny when I can predict almost an entire conversation based on previous encounters.  I can actually tune certain people out and still know what we are talking about.  Strange yet interesting fact about me that I thought I would share.

GTAIV came out.  I didn’t buy it.  I played it for a little while.  Pretty good.  Not sure I’d give it a 10 (if I rated that way) but it was a helluva lot better than I expected it to be.  I do miss Phil Collins and “In The Air Tonight” though.  I’ll pick it up when it’s cheaper, or I have money.  Whichever comes first.

I have yet to get my happy ass into the Metal Gear Beta though it is installed and updated and I have created a dude.  For some reason I went back to Project Gotham 4 and Tony Hawk.  No clue why.  Really random as is this post of just off the wall crap today.  Sorry about that.

Oh one last thing.  Did anyone else know that Dave Mirra is now a Rally car driver?  When the hell did that happen?  He races for Ken Block’s team (the same as Travis Pastrana).  WTF?!?!?!
